El Paso Travel
El Paso is somewhat isolated geographically. All of the other major Texas cities are more than 500 miles away, and the closest (U.S.) city with a population of more than 100,000 is Albuquerque (266 miles). But El Paso has the same travel options of any other city of its size...
...By RailLeisure travelers should consider arriving in El Paso via Amtrak's
Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited
line. Connecting Chicago and Los Angeles, the route travels south from the Great Lakes through Midwestern plains and the Texas Hill Country. At San Antonio, the line veers west to travel through the desert Southwest to arrive at El Paso's historic Union Depot. With six arrivals/departures each week (three in each direction), it's a convenient way to spend a few days in El Paso.
...By AirIf you're in a hurry, traveling by air might be more your speed. Check out the page about catching a flight to El Paso.
...By HighwayInterstate Highway 10 provides the major artery for motor vehicles in El Paso. Lesser traveled highways include U.S. highways 180/62 and 54. El Paso is also served by several charter and commercial bus lines. Greyhound is most popular, but the El Paso-Los Angeles Limousine (915-532-4061) is an economical choice for people arriving from or going to locations further to the west.
Getting around town...Once you've arrived in El Paso, the
Sun Metro
trolley system is a great way to see Downtown and the surrounding area. The 25 cent ride is a convenient way to visit places like the San Jacinto Plaza, the Convention Center, UTEP, and many points of historical and cultural interest.Unfortunately, many of El Paso's locations are inaccessible by trolley. So if you're trying to make a day trip or if you're staying at a hotel outside of Downtown, you should consider renting a car. Navigating the streets of El Paso is fairly easy as long as you're on the right side of the mountain. Once you've decided "Eastside" or "Westside", the mountain serves as a frame of reference, so you'll never really be lost. Click on the link for a searchable online El Paso city map.
