The El Paso Music Scene
The diversity of local and visiting talent has long been a key element of the El Paso music scene. On any given weekend, local bars, clubs, and public venues host classic rock, "garage" jams, DJs, mariachis, punk bands, jazz groups, or the
El Paso Symphony Orchestra
.
Touring acts also bring Latin American Pop, Folk, Country, Hip-Hop, Tejano, and Electronica to El Paso. Recent concerts have showcased performances by Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Marc Anthony, Depeche Mode, The Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews, Los Lobos, and Shakira.
Notable El Paso musicians include residents Al Jourgensen (of the band Ministry) and members of the band Sparta, as well as former residents Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta.
El Paso has also been a vacation, research, and/or recording destination for musicians such as Beck, David Byrne, Johnny Cash, and Jim Morrison. And it made enough of an impression on Marty Robbins to name a song after it. Unfortunately, I don't have permission to reprint
Marty Robbins' "El Paso" lyrics
. But I can tell you that the real Rosa's Cantina is nowhere near as dangerous as the one in the song.
