Visit an El Paso Museum

El Paso Museum of Art
1 Arts Festival Plaza
El Paso, Texas 79901
Most notable among the exhibits is the collection of European (mostly Italian) works donated by businessman and philanthropist Samuel Kress. Some of these paintings date back to the 13 century. My favorite of the permanent galleries, however is the collection of Mexican and Latin American cultural and religious works from the Spanish Colonial era. Also featured is a gallery of paintings and drawings by local artist Tom Lea. Click on the link for more info about the galleries, permanent and temporary exhibits, and events/film screenings.

The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Cultural Center
305 Yaya Lane
El Paso, Texas 79907
The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo is the federally recognized reservation of the Tigua Indians, whose government predates the U.S. Constitution by more than thirty years. Museum exhibits include ancient and contemporary pottery, photos dating back as far as the 19th century, timeline exhibits, and many other examples of Tigua culture and history. The reservation also has a gift shop, restaurant, and the Speaking Rock entertainment center.

El Paso Museum of Archaeology/Wilderness Park Museum
4301 Woodrow Bean Transmountain Road
El Paso, Texas 79924
The Museum of Archaeology (indoors) has three main galleries--each with exhibits of fossils, Native American artifacts, and other displays that discuss the archaeological and natural history of the West Texas and Southern New Mexico region.
Outside, the Wilderness Park includes fifteen acres of desert plant life and nature trails. The best time to experience this is during the Spring, when the Mexican poppies are in full bloom. A word of warning, though: Watch your step. They aren't kidding when they tell you to look out for snakes.

Located at the Doņa Ana County airport (about 30 minutes from Downtown El Paso), the War Eagles Museum has dozens of military and civilian aircraft. Many of these are said to be in working condition. Also on display are other pieces of military equipment, and an extensive collection of antique and classic automobiles.
