My Favorite El Paso Movie TheaterOK, so the Fountain Theatre is technically outside the city limits, but the short trip across the state line to Mesilla, New Mexico, is worth it. The drive is pleasant, and you'll experience the most unique movie theater in the El Paso area. The theater is located in a village about five minutes outside of Las Cruces, and was started by Albert Fountain more than a hundred years ago. It is now operated by the Mesilla Valley Film Society, and has eight showings a week (there's an afternoon matinee on Sunday). The murals on the inside walls and the exterior stucco finish give the theater and old-timey feel, even as you watch the latest Japanese animé or European art film. You and your friends can sit around a table in the back of the theater, or choose the traditional row seating to get closer to the action on the screen. Even the concession stand is unique. Their menu includes Blue Sky soda and homemade pastries--items you are unlikely to find at the typical movie megaplex. A visit to the Fountain Theatre is a must for any film buff interested in independent, alternative, or foreign films. Showings are usually at 7:30 pm every day of the week.
